Nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions used in Jyotisha. They divide the sidereal zodiac into 27 equal sections of 13°20′, allowing the Moon’s position to be described with much greater detail than a twelve-sign Rashi alone.
The Moon moves through roughly one Nakshatra per day, but the exact transition time varies. That is why “today’s Nakshatra” can change during the same civil date.
The Panchang calculation uses the Moon’s sidereal longitude and maps it to the corresponding one of 27 Nakshatra sectors. The exact boundary crossing determines when one Nakshatra ends and the next begins.
