What is Gochar in Vedic astrology?

Gochar means planetary transit: the current movement of planets through the zodiac compared with a reference point in the birth chart. The sky keeps changing, while the natal chart remains the baseline.

A transit by itself is a collective astronomical position. Personal meaning comes from where that transit falls from the natal Moon and Lagna, what houses and planets it influences, and whether the same themes are activated by Dasha.

Current SkySee where the Navagraha are positioned now and whether a planet is shown as retrograde.
Natal ReferenceUse Moon sign and Lagna to understand which houses are being activated for a particular person.
Timing ContextDasha helps determine whether a transit is likely to become central or remain a background influence.
How To Use It

A practical way to read a transit

See the current sign

Start with the planet’s present sidereal sign and motion.

Place it from Moon and Lagna

Check the houses activated from your Moon sign and Ascendant.

Confirm with Dasha

Give more weight to transits that repeat themes already active in Mahadasha or Antardasha.

Major transit themes to watch

SaturnLong-term duty, pressure, structure, maturity and sustained effort.
JupiterExpansion, learning, guidance, opportunity and belief systems.
Rahu & KetuShifts in desire, focus, detachment, novelty and karmic-style turning points in traditional interpretation.
MarsAction, courage, conflict, initiative and short-term heat.
Venus & MercuryRelationships, comfort, communication, learning, agreements and everyday movement.
MoonFast-changing emotional and daily timing tone; useful for short windows rather than long-term conclusions.
Responsible Interpretation

Transit is one layer of timing

Avoid reading a single transit as a complete prediction. The natal promise, Dasha and simultaneous transits matter together.

Use Gochar to notice periods of emphasis and prepare intelligently rather than to create certainty about future events.

Common Questions

Planetary Transit FAQ

What is the difference between transit and birth chart?

The birth chart is fixed for the moment of birth; transits describe where planets are moving now.

Should I read transits from Moon sign or Lagna?

Both are useful in Jyotisha. They provide different reference frames and are best read together.

Why is Dasha important with Gochar?

Dasha helps identify which planetary themes are already active, giving context to the current sky.

What does retrograde mean in the transit tool?

It marks apparent backward motion as seen from Earth, which is treated as an interpretive condition in astrology.

Are today’s transits the same for everyone?

The sky positions are shared, but their house placement and relevance differ according to each natal chart.
