What does Shadbala measure?
It combines six categories of planetary strength: positional, directional, temporal, motional, natural and aspectual.
A structured introduction to the six-fold strength framework used to add quantitative context to a Kundli.
Shadbala literally means “six strengths.” It is a quantitative classical framework for assessing planetary strength from multiple dimensions instead of deciding that a planet is strong or weak from sign placement alone.
The final value is built from six major categories, each of which can contain smaller components. Different software may display the result in Rupas or Virupas and may also compare the total with a traditional minimum requirement for each planet.
| Strength | Meaning | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Sthana Bala | Positional strength | Strength from planetary position, including sign and divisional considerations in the classical framework. |
| Dig Bala | Directional strength | A planet’s strength relative to angular directions/houses traditionally favorable to it. |
| Kala Bala | Temporal strength | Time-related components such as day/night and other calendrical factors. |
| Cheshta Bala | Motional strength | Strength connected with apparent planetary motion, especially relevant to visible planets. |
| Naisargika Bala | Natural strength | An inherent fixed strength assigned by the classical system. |
| Drik Bala | Aspectual strength | Net support or pressure derived from planetary aspects in the chosen calculation method. |
A stronger planet is generally considered more capable of producing its significations and house-related results, but strength is not the same as beneficence. A strong planet can strongly deliver difficult house themes; a naturally benefic planet can be weak; and a low Shadbala value does not erase all other chart factors.
Shadbala components are often calculated in Virupas and displayed after conversion into Rupas, where sixty Virupas equal one Rupa. Classical practice also uses planet-specific reference or minimum values to judge whether the total is adequate. Software may show raw totals, Rupas, a ratio to the required value, or several of these together.
Because the framework has many sub-components, comparing only the final number between two websites can be misleading. First confirm that both programs use compatible astronomical settings and the same detailed formula conventions. Then compare the six categories, not only the grand total.
Exaltation, own sign and debilitation describe particular kinds of zodiacal dignity. Shadbala is broader: it combines positional strength with direction, time, motion, natural strength and aspectual support. A planet can therefore have an impressive dignity label but a mixed total-strength profile, or vice versa.
For interpretation, read dignity, Shadbala, house lordship, aspects, Yogas and Dasha together. Shadbala adds measurement; it does not replace synthesis.
It combines six categories of planetary strength: positional, directional, temporal, motional, natural and aspectual.
No. Strength measures capacity, not whether the planet’s results will always feel pleasant.
Detailed formula choices, ayanamsa, house treatment, time handling and rounding can create differences.
It is most useful as one layer within a complete Kundli interpretation, especially with house lordship, Dasha and Yogas.
