What Sade Sati actually means
Sade Sati is the period in which sidereal Saturn transits the sign immediately before the natal Moon sign, the natal Moon sign itself, and the sign immediately after it. These are the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs counted from the natal Moon.
The popular “seven-and-a-half years” description is approximate. Saturn spends roughly two and a half years in a sign, but retrograde motion and actual ingress dates mean the total calendar duration is not always exactly 7.5 years.

Interpretation
Why Sade Sati is not automatically a disaster
Sade Sati is often discussed in fear-based language, but a transit label alone cannot describe the quality of an entire multi-year period. Saturn’s natal condition, house lordship, house being transited, aspects, active Dasha and other transits all matter.
In practical interpretation, Saturn themes such as duty, delay, structure, boundaries, persistence and long-term responsibility may become more visible. Whether that experience feels constructive, demanding or mixed depends on the complete chart and life circumstances.

Why phase dates can be less tidy than a simple 2.5 + 2.5 + 2.5 model
Saturn does not move through the zodiac at a perfectly uniform apparent speed. Around sign boundaries it can enter a sign, turn retrograde, return to the previous sign and later re-enter. A careful calculator therefore works from actual sidereal Saturn positions and ingress dates instead of assuming fixed 30-month blocks.
This also explains why different websites can disagree near a boundary. One may use tropical Saturn, another sidereal Saturn; sidereal sites can use different ayanamsas; and some summaries simplify retrograde re-entry. When a phase is about to start or end, verify that the calculator uses the same zodiac framework as the natal Moon.
Use With Dasha
Sade Sati is more informative when placed inside the active Dasha
A Saturn transit can emphasize responsibility, restructuring or pressure, but Dasha helps show which natal planets and houses are already active. If Saturn is also a Mahadasha or Antardasha ruler, or strongly connected with the active Dasha planets, Saturn themes may become more prominent. If other periods dominate, the experience can look very different.
Use the Sade Sati status as one map layer: first identify the phase, then inspect natal Saturn, the Moon, the houses involved, current Dasha and other major transits such as Jupiter and the lunar nodes.
